What is a UL Label?
UL Recognized Component Labels are labels that have met a permanence of marking criteria via testing (UL 969) that displays safety information on final products. Many UL Listed end-products require warnings, cautions, electrical ratings, installation information, and other types of safety-related information which are permanently affixed to the UL end-product.
UL Label Requirements
Federal law does not require UL approval, but many companies will refuse to purchase and distribute without UL approval. There are two levels of UL certification that include Listing Certification and Recognition Certification. While UL Listing refers to the certification of a final product, UL Recognition refers to the certification of a component label that is build into a product. Types of UL Labels include:
- UL Listed - has been tested and certified to meet OSHA safety standards
- UL Classified - UL 969 certified
- UL Certified - also known as "Enhanced Mark Labels"
UL Label Considerations
To establish UL certification, manufactures must submit label products for testing and evaluation and label constructions must be suitable under specific Conditions of Acceptability which are outlined in UL 969. Considered is how well the label construction will permanently adhere to the UL end-product given various variables like:
- Application surface
- Indoor use
- Outdoor use
- Temperature
- Presence of cooking oil, gasoline, etc.
Note that if the marks are added to safety-related information printed on the label it is called a Combination Label.
Combination Labels
This occurs when a UL Certifications Mark is also printed on a Recognized Component Label. So, on a Combination Label, there is printed safety-related information and other information as well as the UL Certifications Mark.

What is the Difference Between UL Listed and UL Recognized?
When a product is UL Recognized it ensures the efficiency and safety of the machinery that has been tested to those test methods outlined in UL 969 Marking and Labeling Systems and certifies that a component in a larger mechanism adheres to UL standards. UL Listing refers to stand-alone products with specific functions that have been tested against UL's safety standards.
What Products need UL Labels?
UL approved labels are typically used in electronic applications, including household appliances and other consumer goods. Other industries that use UL certified labels include medical, industrial, and outdoor applications. Some common products to which UL certified labels can be applied include:
- Lighting equipment, including light bulbs
- Cooking equipment
- Metal boxes that house electronic equipment, both outdoors and in industrial automation settings
- Control boxes
- Office furniture that contains electrical outlets
- Luggage with charging stations

How do I get a UL Certification?
You can receive a certification for your product through UL. Label-Aid can not provide inspections or certifications for your products, but we can guide you through labeling them once they are certified.
